Financial Conversations with Fitz #115 - Something new for employers seeking people and people looking for work - 07/17/2012
According to the weatherman we are back to those high, high temps this week. Wow, do we need rain. Can’t believe our crops still look green as they do. Hills are starting to shrivel and burn. Nebraska turned off the irrigation rigs by order. The DOW is probably going to open down Monday. Grain Markets had a wild week. All related to moisture! Six weeks ago we were talking $5.00 corn now we are over $7.
Today I want to visit about something that is has been on the scene but has been revitalized a bit by some state money. If you are looking for workers or you are looking for a job or a better job you need to get familiar with the term National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC). Iowa is a partner of National Career Readiness Certificate. NIACC is our local training and certification group. This program is an assessment of an employee’s readiness and trainability for a job or for a promotion within the company. Streamline hiring by selecting individuals with skills that have been certified by an accurate reliable standard. The ACT WorkKeys assessment-based credential that gives employees and job seekers a uniform, standard, objective measure of key workplace skills. It is based on the performance on 3 assessments: Applied Mathematics, Locating information and Reading for information. This includes Problem solving, critical thinking, reading and using written, work-related text, applying information workplace documents . In other words it challenges those of us who took the short cut in high school thinking we wouldn’t need them any more. Just get in touch with your local Iowa Workforce Center in Fort Dodge, Spencer or Mason City. I have noticed more of our employers are enrolled in the program. Skilled Iowa has at least 624 employers at last count. I see at the bottom of want ads a notation that they are part of the certification program. For recent graduates from our local schools it would really help if you go to NIACC or your local development group to get certified. This also helps local groups to be able to say we have this number of potential employees that are Certified. You will be one up on your job competition if you have the certification and the other person doesn’t.
Went to the Cerro Gordo Fair on Saturday night lots of good 4-H entries. Winnebago County Fair starts on Thursday. Come up for lots of fun and TSB is helping serve a good supper along with the Friends of the Fair. Be sure to check this out. Won’t be long that Kossuth County Fair will be coming up. A great way to see how our young people are doing and show your appreciation.
