Financial Conversations with Fitz #58 - Have you filled out your census…why should we??? - 03/31/2010
Nice weekend for weather and the whole week looks good….MPLS at 70 degrees??? The ponds are disappearing as the drainage systems start to work. Dow looks to open with some strength….sounds like Greece might be straightening things out. Grain should open mixed to strong. Argentina is starting to harvest corn….Our fields are starting to dry out……Usually need a rain to cure the ground so to speak.
Hey, have you filled out your census yet Al? I put mine in the envelope this weekend. Didn’t take long to fill out. A lot of pages but my part was small. Name, age, where and who is about it. It is important for all of us to take the time to fill out and mail in. I want to go over a few things for you to think about this morning. The first important item is it is required by the Constitution. It was originally set up to set up the House of Representative boundary lines. Iowa could be in for a change after this census. It is also a way for the federal, state and local to assess needs and allocate funding. Academics use to study changing population and individuals actually use it to study our genealogy. I know Forest City and Algona particularly are on the bubble for size to move to the next size. A lot of our grants and tax reimbursements are affected by whether we are 5000 or 10,000. Also businesses use it to target advertising, plan expansion, locate new businesses. Some of our institutions in the health business use it to determine if new facilities and or should be built. I know our Housing committee uses it to study need for housing. Our transportation tax reimbursement is dependent on population. The DOT also uses it to plan new projects and public transportation. So please go ahead and fill out…..It only takes a couple of moments. Most of the information they all ready have on us, so all we are doing to clarifying it.
Get to go to a FFA banquet tomorrow night. Different spring programs coming up this month and next.
Remember that you should deal with people in community banks and organizations that when they put something together for you that they will be sitting with them at ball games, church or community events. So, if in doubt give us a call.
