I think spring has sprung. Stopped in to say Hi at two elevators last week…..Tanks and people were running high speed. Actually saw a lot of corn planted. Worked the yard again this weekend. The old time question……crab grass preventer post emergence early or later……Dennis Huling says put it on…..I like to wait until 70 degrees, but I guess we are there…..Better a week early than a week late. The black soils are still cold and wet. Kanawha estimates about 48 degrees….This is a good time to mention, be careful putting chemicals on your yard, just like the farmers are asked to do. This is earth week.
A quick clarification on ‘Home tax credits’…..It is 10% of the purchase price and you can get it right away if you want. Check with your tax person if you purchased a home since the 1st of January 2009 until now.
What is Earth Week….It is actually the day of April 22nd. It is a time that we pay close attention to how we are taking care of the earth that was giving to us to use in a caring matter whether we live in the country or town. Most town people don’t realize it, but we can contaminate our water with our lawn chemicals as much as the ag producers might with their fertilizers if we don’t use the right amount. Most communities do a function the weekend before or the weekend after. Forest City is doing it next Saturday April 25th…..A bunch of groups and individuals meet at Pammel Park to go to assigned areas of town to clean up. My crew is doing main street again this year….Amazing how much can pile up in a year. You can help on a daily basis just by picking up debris that some people forget and throw out of their cars or just leave behind. When I walk along a trail I usually find a plastic bag hanging in a bush that begs for me to pick up and fill before I complete my three miles of walking. You can all check with your local towns or 4-H clubs to see if they are looking for helpers to pick up certain areas. You will feel good and your area will look better for it.
Went to an interesting meeting this week about a ‘Community Garden’ being planned out by Heritage Park. I will talk more about that next week. If you have one in your area let me know about it. We want to plant about 1.6 acres into vegetables to give to people that don’t have access to a garden area or good vegetables.
Remember that you should deal with people in community banks and organizations. That when they put something together for you that they will be sitting with them at ball games, church or community events. So, if in doubt give us a call.
